The Cardinals lone goal came on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute of the game.

The Georgia Southern men's soccer team fell to no. 11 ranked Louisville by only one goal Tuesday night in a foul-filled game against the Cardinals.

The Cardinals found the back of the net off a penalty kick in the 33rd minute of play, being the only scoring play of the entire game.

While the Eagles were shut out, they came close to scoring in the first 15 minutes of the game as sophomore defender Gonzalo Talavera had a header attempt off a corner kick.

Senior forward Javier Carbonell also had a header attempt in the first minute of the second half and freshman midfielder Samuel Mayer came close to scoring in the 72nd minute while the Eagles had a sequence and sent back-to-back shots at the Cardinal defense.

"I can't question anyone on the field today," GS Head Coach John Murphy told gseagles. "I thought it was an impressive effort from Luis [Caraballo], and Samuel Mayer was probably our most dangerous attacking player. We gave Louisville problems tonight, and I think there are a few positives we can draw out of the match."

The game took on quite the aggression, with GS logging five yellow cards and 15 fouls total, while Louisville notched two yellow cards and 12 fouls total.

Overall the Cardinals had the edge over the Eagles in shots 10-5, but freshman goalkeeper Jokull Blaengsson had the edge in saves over the Cardinal’s keeper 4-1.

"It's obviously tough to lose on a penalty, on the road to a top team," Murphy said "But we were certainly proud of the boys and the effort they put in.”

The Eagles will be back in action Oct. 16 as they travel to Alabama to take on UAB at 7 p.m.
